Learn The Story of The Growers Who Shaped Paso Robles

The Moment Paso Robles Found Its Voice

It was in the year 2000 when a group of vineyard proprietors decided that change was long overdue. They were looking for local farmers to have a louder voice and real backup. Small vineyards have always been the soul of Paso Robles wine country, yet a lot of them felt ignored.

At that time, most of the farmers were associated with a bigger organization whose primary focus was hospitality and big wineries. The smaller vineyards had completely different requirements. They were looking for a place that would address their challenges.

From that need came the Independent Grape Growers of the Paso Robles Area, a group created by the growers for the growers.

It All Started with a Simple Goal to Grow Together

IGGPRA laid out on day-one, three clear intentions: to proudly promote local grapes, to assist those who own vineyards, and to build community. The founders wanted Paso Robles wine grapes to receive the attention and consideration that their quality and craftsmanship warranted.

Former IGGPRA Secretary Mike Collins said it best. The goal was “to promote the grapes we grow to the wineries and to help local growers get the best price and the best visibility possible.”

That mission remains strong. What began with a few vineyard owners has grown into a network of more than 130 members made up of growers, associates, and supporters who all share one belief: Paso Robles grows stronger when all growers and wineries succeed.

Here Passion for the Land Finds Its Home

All over Paso Robles, there are vineyards in different forms and sizes. The soil variations, the climate variations and the different challenges are present. But the commonality among them all is the commitment.

Many of our members are family-run vineyards. Some have worked the same land for generations. Others came from other industries and discovered their passion for grape growing later in life. Each one brings something valuable to the community.

IGGPRA gives them a place to learn and connect. Members gain access to education, local market insights, and trusted networks of buyers and suppliers. They find real help with vineyard

management and pricing. More importantly, they find a community that understands their challenges.

Templeton grower Lee Algre said it best. “We’ve been farming all our lives as growers. IGGPRA was created to help everyone move fruit through the system and keep the region thriving.”

We Believe in Learning, Sharing, and Growing Together

IGGPRA believes knowledge grows best when shared. Eight months per year, members meet for educational seminars focused on vineyard care, pest control, irrigation, soil health, and smart business. These sessions keep growers prepared for every season.

The group also hosts four yearly social gatherings on non-seminar months. These events bring people together in an easy, friendly setting. Members meet other members, exchange ideas, and learn from each other. Many call these events the heart of IGGPRA.

These moments create real togetherness. Members get to talk about what’s working, discuss challenges, and see firsthand how others manage their vineyards. It’s growth through connection.

The Board That Leads From the Field

IGGPRA is led by a volunteer Board of Directors made up of people who live and breathe agriculture. They include multi-generation farmers, vineyard managers, ranchers, and business professionals who bring different skills to the table.

The Board meets every month to plan events, share updates, and discuss grower needs. Each member serves a two-year term. This rotation keeps the organization fresh, diverse, and open to new ideas.

We’re only as strong as the members who share their ideas.

A Network That Reaches Beyond the Vineyard

IGGPRA is not just for growers. It welcomes associates and friends who play a part in the local wine community. Associates include vineyard suppliers, consultants, and industry partners who share the same passion for quality.

Friends of IGGPRA are people who love the grape-growing business and want to stay involved. Together, they create a network that connects the entire Paso Robles region from those who grow the grapes to those who turn them into wine.

This community keeps the local economy strong and ensures Paso Robles remains known for its boutique wineries and premium grapes.

We Take Pride in Paso Robles Wine Grapes

The growers of IGGPRA take pride in producing some of the best fruit in California. Their grapes can be sold to wineries across the country, yet most of the fruit stays close to home. The quality grown here has created lasting partnerships between small vineyards and local wineries.

IGGPRA works to keep that standard high. Paso Robles vineyards are known for exceptional Rhône varietals that thrive in the region’s soil and climate.

Our goal is to make Paso Robles a place wineries seek out for grapes. The quality of what we grow speaks for itself.

Our Belief: When Growers Unite, Paso Robles Flourishes

Every grower faces challenges. The weather shifts, labor changes, and markets move. IGGPRA helps members navigate those realities through connection and shared experience.

George Brown, a grower near Creston, joined IGGPRA for that reason. He said, “You need to network because there are challenges you can’t predict without help.”

That spirit of teamwork is what keeps IGGPRA strong. Paso Robles is now one of California’s most respected wine regions because its growers stand together and support each other.

Let’s Make A Lasting Commitment to Growers!

IGGPRA is the spirit of Paso Robles. It’s a reflection of its people, their passion, and their pride in the land.

Our mission remains clear and that is to support local growers, promote fair value, and protect the region’s authentic spirit. The work never stops because each season brings new challenges and new opportunities.

Our full goal is the promotion of Paso Robles and the people who make it special. We all work together, and that’s the best part.

Today, IGGPRA continues to lead with purpose. It connects growers, supports education, and celebrates the land that defines Paso Robles.
