Vineyard 101: Vineyard Nutrition and Summer Weed Management
Date/Time: 18 June 2025 from 1-3pm
Venue: Zoom
You have suckered and shoot-thinned your growing vines. What next? Your incipient grapes are now either in bloom or about to bloom. Up to this point the vines have been using stored carbohydrates to fuel growth and grape development and now need additional nitrogen and other elements. For most growers that means adding chemical fertilizer injected through the irrigation system (chemigation). Foliars may be required later as well. Join us for our June seminar and learn from experts how to take leaf and petiole samples to identify your vineyard nutrient requirements, and when best to apply chemigation and foliar fertilizers.
You have also undoubtedly observed that you have a pretty healthy crop of weeds growing right along with your vines. Those contact killers and pre-emergents you applied months ago worked great for a while, but now the weeds are back. What are your options? Hear from an expert vineyard manager about all the available tools including herbicides and mechanical alternatives to weed control. Learn how to properly fill a spray tank and calibrate your spray output for maximum results. One hour of continuing education credit is available for this presentation.
Speakers
Speaker: Matt Pearse, Nutrien Ag
In addition to working as a pest control advisor, Matthew Pearse is a certified crop advisor for Nutrien Ag Solutions. But he's been interested in agriculture and plants all his life.
“My experience as a kid working with my grandfather in his garden grew into one of my first jobs working in a nursery. As I found success working in that nursery, I set a goal to attend the School of Ag at Cal Poly, SLO," he said.
Today he provides consulting services to clients on all kinds of pesticides and fertilizers.
Speaker: Eddy Kronfli, PCA, IGGPRA Board Member, Owner/Operator Vine Shepherd Vineyard Management Company
Owner and Viticulturist Edward (Eddy) Kronfli completed his Masters Degree in Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis before setting out to work and study in vineyards across the world. Back home in California, he has worked in some of the finest vineyards in both Napa and Paso Robles where he collaborated with winemakers to develop and cultivate ultra-premium winegrapes sustainably and consistently. Detail oriented and data driven, Edward always emphasizes that he is a scientist first, farmer second and aims to take the guesswork out of viticulture.
As always, our seminars are FREE for Members (limit 2 people per membership) and just $30 per person for Guests. Feel free to invite other vineyard owners and managers that you think might be interested in the topics this month.
